Typical boat loan APRs as of October 2026

Published figures are a snapshot of the market, not an offer. The two public sources below measure different things, so their numbers differ: one reports the average APR borrowers were offered by credit score, the other one lender's advertised starting APRs, which assume excellent credit. Together they span roughly 6.95% to 10.19%. The calculator's 7.99% starting rate is an example inside that range, not a quote.

How amortization works on a boat loan

Most boat loans are fixed-rate installment loans: the monthly payment stays the same, but the split inside it changes every month. Interest is charged on the remaining balance, so early payments are mostly interest and later payments are mostly principal. The payment itself comes from the standard formula, explained step by step on our boat loan payment calculator page:

Payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n)
P = amount financed · r = APR ÷ 12 (as a decimal) · n = number of monthly payments

Reading the schedule: a worked example

With the calculator's starting values, a $75,000 boat with $7,500 down, $67,500 financed at 7.99% APR for 15 years:

  • Estimated monthly payment: $644.68, 180 payments in total
  • First month: about $449.44 interest and $195.24 principal
  • Year 1: $5,306 of interest vs $2,431 of principal
  • Turning point: year 7 is the first year in which more of your payments goes to principal than to interest
  • After 5 years: $53,158 still owed, after $24,339 of interest paid
  • Total interest over the full term: $48,542

This is why paying extra early has the biggest effect on total interest, and why selling or refinancing in the first years often leaves a larger balance than expected. Change any input above and the schedule updates instantly.

Estimated payoff date and early payoff

The payoff date is the month of the last scheduled payment if the loan starts this month and every payment is made on time. Extra principal payments shorten the schedule and cut interest; estimate the effect with the extra payment calculator. Before paying a loan off early, check whether your loan agreement has a prepayment penalty.

What changes the payment

Four inputs drive the estimate. Changing any one of them changes both the monthly payment and the total cost:

  • Boat price — the starting point for the amount financed.
  • Down payment and trade-in — reduce the amount financed. See the Down Payment Calculator.
  • Interest rate (APR) — the yearly cost of borrowing. See what APR means on a boat loan.
  • Loan term — a longer term may lower the monthly payment but usually increases total interest. Compare terms with the Loan Term Calculator.

The advanced options add amounts that are often part of a real purchase: taxes (applied to the price minus any trade-in), fees, and other items you may choose to finance, such as a trailer.

An estimate, not an offer

The results are estimates for comparing scenarios. An actual loan's rate, term and payment depend on the lender's review of your application and the boat. When you are ready, you can continue to the official application through Vantage Recreational Finance.
