How the payment is calculated

The calculator first works out the amount financed, then applies the standard amortization formula to it.

Amount financed = price − down payment − trade-in + taxes + fees + other
Payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n) · P = amount financed · r = APR ÷ 12 · n = number of monthly payments

Sales tax, when you enter a rate, is applied to the price minus the trade-in value. Whether your state taxes the difference or the full price can vary, so check the rule where you will register the boat or consult a qualified tax professional.

A worked example

The calculator starts with these illustrative values. The 8.00% rate is an example, not a current market rate or an offer.

  • Boat price: $65,000
  • Cash down payment (10%): $6,500
  • Trade-in value: $15,000
  • Amount financed: $65,000 − $6,500 − $15,000 = $43,500
  • Example APR and term: 8.00% for 15 years (180 payments)
  • Estimated monthly payment: about $416
  • Estimated total interest: about $31,328

Without the trade-in, you would finance $58,500. At the same rate and term, that is about $559 a month and about $42,130 in interest. In this example the trade-in lowers the payment by about $143 a month and total interest by about $10,800.

How each input changes the result

Illustrative examples on a $65,000 boat with $6,500 down, using the standard amortization formula. Not offers of credit.
ScenarioAmount financedMonthly paymentTotal interest
No trade-in, 15 years at 8.00%$58,500$559$42,130
$15,000 trade-in, 15 years at 8.00%$43,500$416$31,328
$15,000 trade-in, 6% tax financed, 15 years$46,500$444$33,488
$15,000 trade-in, 10 years at 8.00%$43,500$528$19,833
  • Down payment and trade-in work the same way: each dollar reduces the amount financed. If you owe money on the boat you are trading in, subtract that payoff from its value and enter only the equity.
  • Taxes and fees raise the amount financed if you roll them into the loan. In the example, financing 6% sales tax on $50,000 (price minus trade-in) adds $3,000 and about $29 a month.
  • Term changes the balance between payment and total cost. A 10-year term raises the payment to about $528 but cuts interest by about $11,500 compared with 15 years.
  • APR applies to whatever you finance, so a larger trade-in also reduces how much the rate matters in dollars.

Estimating a trade-in value

A dealer's trade-in offer may differ from a private-sale price or a published valuation guide, and it depends on the boat's condition, engine hours and demand. Use a conservative figure first, then try a higher one to see the range. To compare several cash down payments without a trade-in, use the Down Payment Calculator, and read buying from a dealer for what to ask about trade-ins.
